Tuesday Thoughts

Thoughts of an Optimistic Writer

When polled, 80% of Americans say, “I have a book in me.” Count me in.

This blog is titled Tuesday Thoughts, written to give you a taste of my writing style. I will not spout vitriol or political bias, as there’s plenty of that available on other sites. I’ll keep the entries at about 1,200 words or less, as I want to be respectful of your time.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments and, if you like the blog, please recommend it to your friends. The most recent post immediately follows this Welcome.

Remember—when we stop reading, we stop learning.

Thanks for visiting!

Wishing you all the best,

Tim

Tuesday Thoughts: Did This Have to Happen?

“Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.”

–Sir Anthony Weldon (17th century English courtier)

This is a difficult piece to write. For thirty-eight years, parents entrusted me with the care of their most precious possession–their children. To practice medicine and see the wonders of God’s healing power is a special privilege. And while it’s still a highly honorable profession, the greater medical community is now tarnished by those who lead it at the highest levels–our public health […]

Tuesday Thoughts: Why We Work

“Catch me a fish and I eat for a day. Teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime.”

–Origin unknown (but it sure sounds like an ancient Chinese proverb!)

I like to fish, but I don’t depend on catching something in order to eat. Thank goodness! But, don’t worry–this post isn’t actually about fishing.

While I have no data or evidence to support my suspicion, I wonder if, with each generation, we’re losing that sense of work ethic foundational to America’s […]

Tuesday Thoughts: Where Are the Few Good Men, or Women?

“We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as a backbone to a life spent defending something…I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it. I’d prefer you just said thank you and went on your way.”

A Few Good Men (1992)

Hard to believe that the mid-term elections will take place […]

Tuesday Thoughts: Why Not Try Compromise?

“By itself, the recognition that we have common hopes and dreams won’t end all the gridlock, resolve all our problems, or substitute for the painstaking work of building consensus and making the difficult compromises needed to move this country forward.”

–President Barack Obama (from his victory speech on November 7, 2012)

In a scene from The American President (I know; it’s a chick flick, but I love it), POTUS interrupts his press secretary’s daily Q&A with a soliloquy that includes the following:

“America […]
