“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money (Matthew 6:24 NIV).”

–Jesus

Do you ever allow your thoughts to drift back to the days when life seemed so much simpler? When families dined together, neighbors were actually neighborly, screens were what kept bugs from getting inside the house, and friends were people, not numbers accumulated on a social media account? I do.

I’m old enough to remember when kids played outdoors, inventing games or playing ball–anything to get out of the house, where we might be tasked with chores our parents concocted for us. The one screen we did have, a television topped with aluminum foil-clad rabbit ears (okay, I’ve already lost some of you!), was tuned to Fury, My Friend Flicka, and Sky King on Saturday mornings, and Ed Sullivan and Bonanza on Sunday nights. Back then, we couldn’t fall asleep late at night with the TV on, as programming ended at the appointed hour with the playing of the Star Spangled Banner.

Oh, how times have changed! While we might pine for those simpler days, they’re gone. The past is past, and little did we know that it would be prologue to a much different world personally, nationally, and globally.

A recent WSJ article reported the findings of a survey conducted by the University of Chicago’s NORC, an independent, nonpartisan research organization. The results from over one thousand respondents were pretty discouraging. Thirty-eight percent said patriotism was very important to them, while 39% said religion was very important. That’s down from 70% and 62%, respectively, from twenty-five years ago.

American exceptionalism, or the belief that America ranks higher than other countries throughout the world, polled at only 21%. Tolerance for others as a very important value dropped from 80% to 58% … in just four years.

Only 23% of adults under age 30 said that having children was very important. With such a world view, is that really a surprise? Why would they want to bring a child into a world they view so pessimistically?

The seminal question is why? Why such a dispirited view of our life in America? The article suggested several possibilities: The September 11, 2001 attacks on our country, the 2008 financial crisis, Covid, and political divisiveness, to name a few. While these events have impacted our lives, I believe the answer is much more fundamental and related to what drove America’s birth.

We all know our country was founded out of a yearning for new life, freedom from tyranny, and the opportunity to chase happiness. The vaunted pursuit of those values was predicated on a belief in God and His divine providence and protection. The two are synergistic, as neither is as strong when the other is absent.

Friends, in large measure we’ve lost that belief in, and dependence on, God. Not everyone, to be sure, but a significant percentage of the populace now places little value on corporate worship, prayer, and outward expressions of faith.

When polled, one gentleman–only 33 years of age–suggested that patriotism is declining as individualism (a euphemism for self-centeredness) rises, resulting in a sense of entitlement and a turning from community involvement. I think he’s on to something. When we think we don’t need our community, or believe we can manage our lives without divine intervention, we’re sorely missing the mark.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the only priority that increased in importance over the past twenty-five years was, you guessed it, money. It grew from 31% in 1998 to 43% now. Frankly, I’m surprised it didn’t poll higher. The above verse from Matthew’s Gospel, taken from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, tells us we “can’t serve both God and Money.” Money, to be sure, but one could substitute pride, material possessions, power, or any number of other false idols.

While we can’t go back in time to a simpler life, hopefully, the “values pendulum” will swing back in favor of those beliefs and principles that were much more prevalent then than they are now. It can happen, but we have to devalue selfishness, embrace community, and put our trust in a Power much higher and stronger than ourselves.

Tim, this brings back great memories of building treehouses in the woods, shooting pine cones from the trees with my pellet gun, and of course playing army with my homemade machine gun I made from scrap wood and old nails. It was just what we did and had a great time doing it. We all reflect back on our childhood and simpler times….. and of course always Church on Sunday and visited our relatives in the afternoon. Times have changed. Technology and computer screens have made our world a different place,. I have to say it is nice not to have to use tin foil to have a clear TV picture. I totally understand living in a new era of emails, texts, ect., but we all can take time to enjoy life without always a screen or mobile device. So let’s get out there and enjoy the great outdoors that God created for us to enjoy. Great article Tim. Before I head outside I’m going to get me a bowl of Kellogg’s corn flakes and watch an episode of Andy Griffith.

Having a 15-year old granddaughter trying to navigate this complex social, political educational environment, I often wish she could have grown up in simpler times. I enjoyed, similar to you, playing with neighbor friends every day after school, riding my bike to school, attending church every Sunday, singing in the choir and taking part in Girl Scouts! Doing homework and practicing the piano were my daily concerns, and I loved that too! My granddaughter always had to have arranged play dates with friends and had to be driven to and from school every day. Children in her neighborhood went to many different schools public and private. Oh, I wish she could have had the close-knit community of my childhood and youth.

Recently read a rat study where the rats were placed in an environment with plenty of everything. The rat population grew, rats set up harems, interest was lost in everything, the rats quit reproducing and eventually the colony died out due to old age. I see in our modern society much of what took place in the rat study.

What we need in America is a true spiritual revival from the one and only true God. As Tim said there is no going back and who really wants that. Are we willing to experience major sufferings and self sacrifice for the future of our great grandchildren who when they have children and grandchildren they will be able to reflect on their growing up days with fond memories like us. I think we sound like Old Testament Israel!! “Nothing new under the sun”

I agree, Tim. God has been put on the back burner and self absorption has taken front and center.

I’m glad you chose to write about this! I keep thinking about the different parts of the survey and how they connect — did one of these trends cause the others? were they all caused by something else not studied? I don’t have an answer, as it feels like a chicken and egg question. However, I was struck that I also read yesterday a column by Thomas Friedman about AI — a seemingly very different topic than yours — from which I pulled the following quotes:
“The faster the pace of change and the more godlike powers we humans develop, the more everything old and slow matters more than ever — the more everything you learned in Sunday school, or from wherever you draw ethical inspiration, matters more than ever.”
“God save us if we acquire godlike powers to part the Red Sea but fail to scale the Ten Commandments.”
I do not know the answer to turn around that trend line on religion, but it does seem of great urgency to me as well. The only things I know to do are pray and live out my faith every day.

Stephanie Vanderford’s conclusion reminded me of the Lord’s direction in 2 Chronicles 7:14 to “humble ourselves, and pray, and seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways…” and God would act…then as now, conditions had to become unbearable before that would happen…it seems to me, that we are headed down that same road, but sadly haven’t reached the point of “unbearable”…even so, “pray and live out your faith”, as Stephanie suggested…reach out to others, tell them about Jesus and the hope there is in Him…when we “humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways”…God will act, in you, and on your behalf, to give you and others, hope for the future…”desperate times, desperate measures”…turn to the Lord today!!
